Utilities face a growing challenge in managing wildfire risk. This challenge spans their own infrastructure vulnerability, operational disruptions, regulatory compliance, public safety, environmental responsibility and very large financial impacts from the fires they cause. Any lens reveals an enormous problem (billions of dollars on the line each year, communities and ecosystems at risk), one which many utilities are not equipped to handle today. The area of wildfire-prone regions and at-risk communities is ever-expanding, causing more Utilities to confront this challenge.

Pyrologix have been leaders in the fire modeling space for decades, with a long history  supporting utility companies on  conducting wildfire risk assessments. Our products quantify a growing suite of actionable wildfire risk analytics to inform strategic planning, WMP requirements, and operations. With our new Pyrologix Wildfire Operational Risk (POWR) platform, we model ignition and consequence analysis across a range of weather forecasts, fire scenarios, and strategic community and ecosystem assets. Our fire modeling will continue to improve over time as we advance and integrate our ML capabilities in areas such as fine-scale vegetation mapping and urban conflagration propagation.

Role Overview

Utilities is one of Vibrant Planet’s highest growth segments. We’re looking for a dynamic, driven and passionate individual who will grow our impact with electric utilities across the US and beyond. We’re looking for someone who will take an owner’s mindset to set the strategy, build and close the pipeline, architect meaningful partnerships, and partner with our fire science and product leaders to accelerate our growth.

You’ll inherit real momentum. We already serve flagship utility customers including a top-5 US IOU, a mid-size IOU deploying our operational risk platform, and a growing cohort of small-medium utilities. We have active partnership conversations with multiple companies across different segments of the utilities space who see differentiated value in combining our fire modeling and risk analytics expertise with their offerings, and can rapidly accelerate our footprint. What we need is a commercially-minded, entrepreneurial leader who can take this early foundation and build it into a scaled, growing business. 

Responsibilities

Segment Strategy and Leadership

  1. Shape our utility segment strategy. Diagnose where market opportunity and customer demand sits, partner with our fire science and product teams to set product priorities, lead resourcing discussions, and drive the success of our emerging utility business.
  1. Architect a comprehensive partnership strategy, including a robust pipeline and outreach plan, to significantly expand our market presence and accelerate revenue growth.
  2. Lead the entire partnership lifecycle, from initial outreach and relationship building, to negotiating and finalizing complex, multi-year commercial agreements that drive long-term value.
  3. Build the business development playbooks and processes for a new and scaling business. You will be the first dedicated commercial hire in the utilities segment.
  4. Collaborate closely with our sales leadership, customer success, marketing, science, operations, product, and project management teams to ensure our offerings, messaging, and delivery are aligned to market needs.

Sales and Business Development Execution

  1. Lead the end-to-end sales process, from prospecting and qualifying to managing and closing new sales. Leverage your consultative approach to forge relationships with senior leadership and relevant stakeholders at utilities across the United States to demonstrate Vibrant Planet’s and Pyrologix’s value.
  2. Drive deal closure within targeted accounts, creating mutual value for clients and Vibrant Planet.
  3. Conduct extensive background research and regular outreach to potential customers.
  4. Maintain meticulous sales hygiene by recording accurate deal information, next steps, probabilities, and communications within our sales CRM, HubSpot.
  1. Conduct compelling product demonstrations and business cases for prospects and qualified leads.
  2. Attend industry events and trade shows, traveling to meet prospects across the US. Expect to travel every month.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree (Bachelors in engineering or business or related field and/or Master's degree a plus).
  • 8+ years of demonstrated expertise in sales and business development, or commercial leadership. Experience in complex business-to-business sales and enterprise software solutions required. Experience in the utility sector is strongly preferred.
  • Proven track record of managing full sales cycles, from initial contact to deal closure.
  • Experience selling and/or communicating the value propositions of a highly technical product and navigating complex procurement cycles.
  • Experience in startup environments, with an understanding and eagerness to wear multiple hats, fail fast and learn quickly, and an enthusiasm for operating in ambiguity. 
  • Willingness to travel regularly for client engagement, professional development, and conference/event opportunities.
  • Exceptional verbal, written, and visual communication skills within a fast-paced environment, with a profound ability to listen and digest complex information.
  • Team-oriented mindset with a proactive approach to seeking feedback and collaboration.
  • Proficiency in working within structured sales processes and opportunity qualification frameworks.
  • Strong understanding of the utility sector, including how utilities procure technology, manage wildfire risk, and navigate regulatory requirements is preferred. Existing relationships with utility decision-makers is a significant advantage

Duty Requirements

  1. Full time, year-round employment.
  2. Willingness and ability to travel 25% time.
  3. This is a virtual position with an operational independent/home office with sufficient internet speeds.

Compensation

$200k-$275k On Target Earnings (based on experience), plus meaningful equity in a venture-backed company at a positive inflection point.
